Wine Mail #25: Laughing Stock BC Wine Feature

Our March BC Wine Feature is Laughing Stock Winery out of Naramata, BC.
“…a serious enterprise with a most unfortunate moniker. We wake up every day with the constant motivation of not living up to our name. We strive to produce some of the highest quality wines in the Okanagan Valley. It’s what we do.”

The Wines:

Pinot Gris 2019, Okanagan Falls
14.5% – “Our winemaking choices for this vintage include whole cluster pressing for a fresh fruit profile and settling the juice with no skin contact.” Partially fermented in concrete eggs, aged sur lie for 6 months with weekly stirring.

Viognier 2019, Osoyoos
14.9% – “An hour south of the Naramata Bench winery site, this vineyard is hotter & provides the extra heat units that Viognier requires to ripen fully”

Pinot Noir 2018, Okanagan Falls
14% – “After hand picking, we double hand sort the grapes followed by whole berry fermentation… done in stainless tanks, with 20% as whole clusters. The wine was then barrel aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.”

Blind Trust 2018, Naramata
13.5% – “A blind trust is a financial trust in which the executors have full discretion over the assets, and the trust beneficiaries have no knowledge of the holdings of the trust. In this case, our Blind Trust is a wine in which the winemaker has full discretion over the blend, so you’ll just have to trust us.

Portfolio 2017, Naramata Bench, 14.2% – “Just like a finely balanced stock portfolio, putting together a blended wine takes finesse and judgement so that the experience of the whole will be greater than the sum of the individual parts. Our Portfolio is a wine that marries the art and science of winemaking with a blend of Bordeaux varietals. For the past decade, Portfolio has routinely won the top accolades from wine competitions and wine critics alike: a proven chart-topper.”

Clay Amphorae aged Viognier, Roussane, Marssane.
“This small cap release is a tribute to how wine was made in ancient times. Using a hands-off winemaking approach, this is our 6th year working with 500L terracotta Clay Amphorae. The result is a wine that challenges you to define it to a specific region or style.”

All but the Clay Amphorae wine in this feature are offered at $4.00 off per bottle for a total savings of $20.00 on the 6 bottles of wine.

These 6 wines are $205.03 + tax & dep. with a total of $238.70 after tax and deposit.

Wine Mail #24: Blue Grouse BC Wine Feature

Our February BC Wine Feature of the Month is Blue Grouse Estate Winery & Vineyard.

The Vancouver Island wine region staple underwent a big vineyard expansion in the last few years.

Blue Grouse Winery and Team have been planning their 26-acre vineyard expansion under Pedro Parra’s tutelage. They have been working with Señor Terroir for about 5 years now, starting with their first expansion, the Paula vineyard which was planted in 2017.  The Brunner Vineyard is the current expansion project and will have five varietals: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and some Gamay Noir.  Planting started in 2020 and will continue this year in February and May.

Pedro Parra was born in Concepción, Chile, near Bio Bio and Itata, and he is raising his family there now. Pedro holds a PhD in terroir from the Paris Center of Agriculture, with six years’ experience in French terroirs. As a highly respected consultant working in several countries and terroirs (Chile, Argentina, USA, Italy, Canada, France, Armenia), Pedro brings an open mind and vision to winemakers and viticulturists alike.

Wine Mail #23: Bizou & Yukon + Narrative Wines

Our January BC Wine Feature of the Month is OCP’s new Bizou + Yukon wine line, alongside the benchmark Narrative Wines blended series.

Read more on the new label below!

The Ranch is a serious project and ultimately when the vines are mature the wines that come from there will be serious stuff. Yet the #1 question we get asked about is “how are Bizou + Yukon?” That got us thinking. Can we talk about what we are doing at The Ranch in a way that will resonate with all wine consumers, not just the Illuminati, and not just the 5% ers who geek out on wine? We sometimes forget to have fun and to be relatable to people who are just learning about wine.

Great Pyrenees are impossible to train, as they are bred to be independent and use their instincts over learned behaviour. They patrol whatever area is determined to be their space – in this case The Ranch. They protect animals, people and of course their food. At The Ranch, they have been set up to protect sheep.

The storyline began with Okanagan Crush Pad’s owner, Christine Coletta, wondering what the dogs got up to when she was not around. Each of these 12 labels has some significance that relates back to our program. The wine bottle tipping out to create a lake speaks to our nature conservation and restoration project. The giant insects roaming the fields depicts our annual beneficial insect release. We hope you enjoy discovering each one

$2.00 OFF = $18.17 + tax & dep.
Here’s a nice idea to make Pinot Gris just a tad more interesting. Gooseberry hints up front, it starts out pretty classic Sauvignon Blanc, easy on the palate with some serious fruit intensity and mouthfeel, tropical fruit, grapefruit citrus with juicy acidity and a zesty close. A very refreshing drop.

$2.00 OFF = $18.17 + tax & dep.
I’m still trying to figure out who Pinkie is. But never mind. This brings bright red berries up front with floral notes before a juicy and approachable, vibrant fresh strawberry palate. Great with ham and cold cuts. Definitely a ‘drink don’t think’ kind of pink that’s perfect for the soon-to-be-here dog days of summer.

$2.00 OFF = $19.05 + tax & dep.
The blend is made up of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that’s wild fermented in concrete. The nose shows a rich broth of bumbleberry, savoury raspberries, earth, anise and a floral note.
It has such lovely texture on the palate with polished tannins to go forward red berries, anise, licorice and a smooth delivery through the finis

$3.00 OFF = $18.17 + tax & dep.
Our Narrative Red is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Expressing true Okanagan characteristics of red fruits with a distinctive herbal note. Soft tannins coupled with nicely balanced acidity make this an easy drinking wine on its own or paired with food.

$3.00 OFF = $17.30 + tax & dep.
Our Narrative White was crafted using Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and a touch of Riesling. The components were naturally fermented and aged separately for 8 months in both concrete and stainless steel tanks to give the wine great texture but maintain freshness and lively fruit flavours.
