Craft Beer Tasting Notes: Aug. 22

This week’s new releases were pretty well split between fruit ales (and ciders) and IPAs. We have some really tasty versions of both, loaded with great summery flavours. And, remember, if you snap together your own custom 4pk of individual cans, you get a 5% discount!

Salt Spring Wild Wild Berry Cider 6.8% 750ml (Salt Spring Island)
Pours a rosé wine colour. Sweet berries, ripe apple and and hints of flower and herb notes on the nose. Bright fruit, tart berries, sour apple on the palate, with good acidity and good carbonation.

Brickers Hopped Cider 5.5% 500ml (Sechelt, BC)
Pours a rich yellow colour. Juicy citrus and apple notes with hints of lime and floral hop notes on the nose. Tart apple on the palate with spicy/citrusy hop notes and south mouthfeel. No carbonation. 

Moon Under Water Juicy Spruce Tip Sour 6% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours a bright golden yellow colour. Not much on the nose, hint of spruce spice. Just as described, this is full of juicy fruit notes, hints of spice and a bit of balanced, foresty spruce notes on the palate.

Field House Whisky Sour Ale 6.5% 650ml (Fernie, BC)
Pours a cloudy pink-tinged pale white-yellow colour. Notes of ginger, spice, whisky, oak and spice on the nose. Complex on the palate with good acidity and notes of ginger, lime, and hints of Angostura bitters and whisky. Sour!

Dieu du Ciel Solstice d’éte Raspberry Ale 5.9% 4pk (Quebec)
Pours a raspberry red colour. Big notes of raspberry pastilles on the nose. Big acidity on the palate, with sour raspberry notes dominating. Tart, dry and enchanting.

Parkside Beauregard Blueberry Wit 4.8% 473ml (Port Moody, BC)
Pours a pink-purple colour. Notes of tart blueberry on the nose. Very light with soft, subtle blueberry notes and a dry finish.
Deep Cove Mystery Lake Raspberry Saison 5% 650ml (Vancouver)
Pours a pale pink-tinged orange colour. Floral raspberry notes on the nose. Dry and crisp with balanced raspberry notes and a bitter finish. 
Strathcona Canned Heat Mango Passionfruit Hefe 5.5% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a cloudy orange-yellow colour. Complex notes of hefe spice (clove), banana and tropical fruit on the nose. Juicy mango and passionfruit with spice and a bit of tartness.

Steamworks YVR Session IPA 4.4% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a clear golden yellow colour. Funky notes of resin, tropical fruit, gooseberry and cat pee on the nose. Light and subtle on the palate with hints of fruit and spice. Dry, bitter finish.

Breakside Tall Guy Citra IPA 7.1% 650ml (Portland)
Pours a rich golden yellow colour. Bright citrus, intense grapefruit, resin and funk notes on the nose. Sweet on the palate with notes of resin, spice and lemon zest. Bitter finish.  

Boombox Holotape IPA 7.3% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a rich golden yellow colour. Juicy notes of lemon curd, tropical fruit and melon on the nose. Soft and sweet on the palate with notes of bubblegum, tropical fruit and spice with a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Parallel 49 Powerslide DIPA 8% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a rich golden yellow colour. Sweet malt and bright citrus notes on the nose. Similar on the palate. A well-made and balanced interpretation of the style with caramel, citrus and booze notes.
Deep Cove Jug Island Hazy IPA 6.8% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a hazy pale orange-yellow colour. Dank, juicy citrus and passionfruit notes on the nose. Soft, sweet, creamy on the palate with tropical fruit notes. Bitter finish.
Superflux Barracuda IPA 6.2% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a cloudy yellow colour. Melon, ripe berries and resin notes on the nose. Big and juicy. Fruit salad, spice and herbs. Big carbonation, bitter finish.

Ravens Rook Strawberry Rhubarb Sour 5% 650 (Abbotsford, BC)
Pours a pale pink-white colour. Notes of rhubarb, yogurt and spice on the nose. Good acidity on the palate with hints of strawberry and sour rhubarb and a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Bellwoods/Four Winds Fog Zombie DIPA 8% 473ml (ON/BC)
Pours a cloudy pale orange-yellow colour. Juicy and spicy with bubblegum notes on the nose. Tons of fruit on the palate, big sweetness, a bit thick with a balancing bitter finish.
Steel & Oak Parkade IPA 7.1% 473ml (New Westminster)
Pours an orange-yellow colour. Notes of sweet spice, orange marmalade, resin and bubblegum on the nose. Sweet notes of bubblegum and spice up front with balancing notes of lemon zest/pith and a bitter finish.
