Something for everyone arrived in July! It was a busy month with new arrivals streaming in every week. We could barely keep up! We’re definitely seeing a trend in farmhouse ales happening, epitomized by the great success of the recent Farmhouse Fest in Vancouver. If you’re a fan of farmhouse saisons and sours, check out the new brews from Quebec’s Le Castor, as well as BC breweries like Four Winds, Dageraad, Phillips and others.
Rogue Paradise Pucker 6% 650 ml (Oregon)
Fresh orange, orange peel oil, passionfruit and exotic tropical guava-ish aromas. Palate was loaded with freshly juiced orange flavours along with grapefruit, guava and passionfruit on the sharply sour, dry finish. Extremely refreshing.
Steamworks Cucumber Ale 4.7% 473ml (Vancouver)
Honeydew melon and fresh cucumbers on the nose, and similar flavours on the palate with a touch sweet honeyed malt on the finish. Strangely refreshing and unique. Drink cold.
Four Winds Velo Pale Ale 5.5% 6pk (Delta, BC)
Massive grapefruit and astringent lemon juice aromas, lemon curd, preserved lemon and crushable citrus fruit flavours. Medium bodied with hints of minerality and saltiness to keep you going back for more, with a dry, pithy, bitter finish.
Four Winds La Maison Wild Saison 4.5% 6pk (Delta, BC)
Pours a hazy lemon yellow colour. Pineapple, citrus and hay on the nose. Fresh and funky notes of hay, fruit and spice on the palate. Very light and refreshing.
Left Hand Saison au Miel 6.8% 473ml (Colorado)
Floral, earthy and honeyed aromas with classic saison yeast notes. The palate is heavy with honey and finishes dry and floral.
Melvin Drunken Master IIPA 9% 355ml (Wyoming)
Pours a copper orange colour. Sweet and fruity on the nose with major ripe melon and fresh tropical fruit notes. Sweet and boozy on the palate with big ripe tropical fruit notes and a hit of bitterness.
Four Winds Bloom Farmhouse Ale 7.1% 750ml (Delta, BC)
Sweet hay and a bright farmhouse funk on the nose, the palate is heavy with layers of earthy, floral, funky flavours with some great orangey citrus notes throughout. Complex and extremely well balanced. Perfectly dry finish.
Phillips Wild Card Brett IPA 7% 650ml (Victoria)
Candied citrus aromas and some sweet grain and very little funk, if any, on the nose. Palate is bright and filled with candied citrus, ruby grapefruit flavours finishing very dry and clean.
Dageraad Antwerpen Abbey-Style Tripel 8.5% 750ml (Burnaby, BC)
Pours a cloudy yellow colour. Sweet orchard fruit notes with a hint of spice and grainy malt on the nose. Sweet and fruity on the palate with rich stone fruit and orchard fruit notes and a hit of booze. Delicious.
Dageraad/Upright Rhythm Section Saison with Spices 5% 750ml (BC/OR)
Pours a hazy pale yellow colour. Funky straw/hay, citrus and stone fruit on the nose. Dry and crisp on the palate with notes of earthy, peppery citrus a bit of grainy malt and minerality. Big carbonation, fine bubbles.
Le Castor Abricot Barrel Aged Saison 7.7% 500ml (Quebec)
Pours a hazy orange colour. Musty and funky on the nose with big dried apricot notes. Sweet, funky and boozy apricot notes with balancing acidity.
Le Castor Chardonnay Wild Saison 6.8% 500ml (Quebec)
Pours a cloudy golden yellow colour. Notes of pineapple, funk, lemony citrus and spice on the nose. Creamy mouthfeel with white grape, tropical fruit, funk and booze notes. A bit tart.
Deschutes Swivelhead India Red Ale 6.5% 6pk (Bend, OR)
Pours a mahogany red-brown colour. Sweet malt and dried fruit and citrus aromas on the nose. Caramel, burnt raisins and sweet malt on the palate with a balancing earthy bitterness.
Doan’s Funtime Series “Lucinda” 5% 650ml (Vancouver)
A collaboration between Doan’s & Odd Society Distillery. It’s a combo of Doan’s Kölsch and Odd Society Creme de Cassis. Pours a rich, deep rosé colour. Floral, earthy currant and grainy malt notes on the nose. Subtle tart berry notes with hints of grainy malt on the palate and a bitter finish.
Patagonia/Hopworks Long Root Ale 5.5% 473ml (Portland)
Pours a rich orange-yellow colour. Subtle grainy/corn notes on the nose. Earthy and grainy on the palate with notes of stone fruit and citrus and a dry finish.
