Craft Beer Tasting Notes: May 17

It was an unusually slow week for new releases, but some key arrivals came in from Phillips, Bellwoods (TO) and Persephone/Townsite. We have also included some tasting notes here from products we’ve had in stock for a bit, but hadn’t previously sampled. And don’t forget that we still have some beers left on our “Blowout” shelves. They’re going fast though! (In fact, not all “Blowout” beers pictured here are still in stock.)

Now onto the new stuff:

Bellwoods Jelly King Dry Hopped Sour 5.6% 500ml (Toronto)
Pours a hazy yellow colour. Juicy tropical fruit and bright citrus notes on the nose. Pleasant sweet/tart balance on the palate with notes of juicy pineapple and lemon and a dry finish.

Hoyne Vienna Lager 5.3% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours a burnt orange colour. Subtle caramel and citrus notes on the nose. Nutty/roasty notes on the palate with hints of caramel and balanced bitter finish.

Steel Toad Kermode West Coast IPA 7% 4pk (Vancouver)
Pours a cloudy orange-yellow colour. Floral notes of pineapple and bubblegum on the nose. Similar on the palate with a nice roundness balanced by pleasant bitterness. Delicious.

BC Tree Fruits Broken Ladder Pears & Peaches 5% 4pk (Okanagan)
Pours clear peach pink colour. Sweet candied orchard fruit aromas on the nose. Sweet orchard fruit on the palate with notes of caned peaches and a dry finish.

Rekorderlig Strawberry Lime Cider 4.5% 473ml (Sweden)
Pours a rosé pink colour. Strong strawberry notes on the nose. Sweet strawberry candy, Jelly Belly and Jolly Rancher notes on the palate.

Persephone Black Lager 4.5% 650ml (Gibsons)
Pours a dark chocolate colour. Strong roasty chocolate/coffee and fruit notes in the nose. On the palate the dark malts are very assertive offering notes of dark chocolate and burnt marshmallows. Strong bitter finish. Very drinkable and yet fairly light bodied.

Freigeist Ehrenfeider Unfiltered Altbier 4.8% 500ml (Germany)
Pours a deep mahogany red-brown colour. Rich caramel malt notes on the nose with hints of dried fruit. Malt forward, with roasty/nutty notes and a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Phillips Thunder Punch Unfiltered IPA 6.3% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours a hazy orange-yellow colour. Big tropical fruit notes of pineapple, guava and passion fruit on the nose. Similar on the palate with hints of pine and balanced sweetness/bitterness.

Persephone/Townsite Coastal Collaboration Belgian Dark Ale 8.4% 650ml (Sunshine Coast)
Pours a rich mahogany brown colour. Notes of banana, figs, vanilla and dark roasty malt on the nose. Complex on the palate with notes of sweet fruit, banana bread, chocolate, spice and herbal cedar.

Sixpoint 5Beans Bazaar Porter 10% 355ml (Brooklyn)
Pours a dark black-brown colour. Rich notes of coffee, vanilla, spice cabinet and chocolate on the nose. Similar on the palate with a hit of booziness and a lasting finish. Delicious.

Nogne Ø Cellarman’s Reserve 8% 500ml (Norway)
Pours a dark black-brown colour. Tart smelling with notes of chocolate and berries on the nose. Complex, creamy notes of chocolate, fruit and boozy cognac on the palate.
