Craft Beer Tasting Notes: May 19

Every week we post tasting notes from our Friday Staff Tasting, providing you with our take on all the latest craft beer arrivals. If last week was about local seasonals, this week is about some really cool and interesting beers arriving from all over the world. Two Belgian sours are really worth checking out if you’re a fan of sours.

st louis gueuze bacchus oud bruin

St. Louis Geueze Fond Tradition 4.5% 375 ml (Belgium)
Pours an orangey yellow colour. Tart, dry notes of apple and lemon on the nose with a hint of bubblegum in the background. Very dry on the palate with a sharp tartness and notes of honey, lemon and wood. Two Rufus paws up from: Glenn
Bacchus Flemish Oud Bruin 4.5% 375ml (Belgium)
Pours a chestnut brown colour with a red tint. Notes of Twizzlers and tart strawberry on the nose. Herbal/medicinal notes on the palate with dark fruit notes, just the right amount of tartness and a nice dry finish. Complex and refreshing.

Pours a very pale yellow colour. Notes of boozy peach brandy, Rockets and a little funk on the nose. Big “drunken peach” and apple cider notes on the palate, with a touch of sweetness. Addictive.

Pours a light copper colour. Funky/fruity hop notes on the nose. Very tropical and juicy on the palate with big citrus notes and a bit of pine. Crisp bitter finish.

Pours a foreboding dark mahogany colour. Rich, deep malt notes and dark, earthy hop notes on the nose. On the palate it’s an intense combination of sweet malt and bourbon notes bolstered by a substantial bitter finish.

Pours a deep, rich mahogany brown colour. Rich caramel, booze, dark rye, honey and dark fruit notes on the nose. Sweet notes of dark fruit, spice and marmalade on the palate. A complex sipper. Two Rufus paws up from: David
