Definitely more darker and heavier beers showing up this week. But then again we received Fuggles & Warlock’s popular Kiwami Plum Sour in 6pk cans, so not everything is dark and malty! Also, check out the glorious Four Winds Blackberry Jam IPA, which smells and tastes just like the name says. We’re also pleased to welcome back Base Camp brewing back to the store. This Portland brewery is now contracting a Vancouver brewery to produce some of its lineup in order to sell it at prices that are more competitive in the market. Great idea! Lastly, if you love big, strong barrel-aged brews, don’t miss out on Steamworks Scarlet Red Rye Ale—drink now or cellar!
Fuggles & Warlock Kiwami Plum Sour 6.3% 6pk (Richmond)
Pours cloudy orange, acidic and sour plum aromas with unripe plum and juicy citrus on the palate with a sharp, sour, dry finish. Really drinkable and refreshing.
Moody Third Anniversary Saazy Wit 6% 1L Crowler can (Port Moody, BC)
Pours slightly cloudy golden yellow. Heavy wheat, ripe peach and spicy hops on the nose with honeyed wheat and classic Saaz hop character on the palate, offering clean, spicy and dry finish. Well-structured and delicious.
Four Winds Blackberry Jam IPA 6.5% 4pk (Delta, BC)
Pours a clear, orangey pink colour, and smells exactly like blackberry jam with blackberry aromas and a forward creamy note with some bright hop spice. The palate is medium bodied and lightly creamy with tart berry fruit and hints of vanilla on the moderately bitter finish. Not as “jam” forward as you’d expect, as the IPA is detected throughout.
Base Camp Ultra Gnar Gnar IPA 6.7% 355ml (Vancouver)
Pours clear orange. Classic American IPA aromas of pine, grassy hops and grapefruit on top of the caramel and sweet malt. Similar on the palate with hints of sweeter tropical fruit on the lightly bitter finish.
Base Camp S’more Stout 7.2% 355ml (Vancouver)
Pours black with mocha coloured head. Roasty dark malt and nutty chocolate bar flavours on the palate, with a dry finish. It’s recommended to add a roasted marshmallow in a mug of S’more Stout!
Ravens Flying Dutchman North East IPA 6.75% 650ml (Abbotsford, BC)
Pours hazy yellow. Aromas of pineapple, mango and over-ripe tropical fruit, similar on the palate with a sweeter, creamy body and a bitter finish.
Off the Rail Kerry’d Away Dark IPA 5.6% 650ml (Vancouver)
Pours clear, dark brown. Aromas of charred black malt, black chocolate and hints of grapefruit. Similar on the full-bodied palate with bittersweet dark chocolate and grapefruity hops with a roasty bitter finish.
Phillips Black Toque Cascadian Dark Ale 6.5% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours black. Aromas of dark chocolate and black malt. Similar on the palate, with milk chocolate flavours and citrusy hops on the bitter finish.
Steamworks Scarlet Red Rye Ale 9.5% 650ml (Vancouver)
Pours a deep burnt orange colour. Aromas of toasted caramel and rich dark fruit, seriously present rye whiskey and spice with underlying milk chocolate. Similar on the palate with a bold sweetness and hot, boozy rye. Could rest for several months or drink fresh, depending on your preference.
Strange Fellows Blackmail Milk Stout 4.2% 4pk (Vancouver)
Pours black. Lightly creamy aromas of dark chocolate and coffee. Fairly light and creamy on the palate with fresh coffee and bitter dark chocolate on the finish. Drink a little warmer.
