Craft Beer Tasting Notes: Oct. 31

Happy Halloween! Our pumpkin ales may be gone, but we have plenty of scary craft beer, wine and spirits to fuel your Halloween fun, like Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale for instance. Stop in and see what’s on hand!

In the meantime, here are our tasting notes for the latest craft beer and cider arrivals.

Sea Cider Sassamanash Cranberry Hibiscus Cider 9.9% 750ml (Saanich, BC)
Pours a pale salmon pink-orange colour. RIpe apple and juicy sweet cranberry notes on the nose. A touch sweet up front with cranberry juice and ripe apple notes on the palate a slightly bitter finish.

Collective Arts Stranger Than Fiction Porter 5.5% 473ml (Ontario)
Pours a dark brown-black colour. Coffee, dark chocolate and butterscotch notes on the nose. Roasty notes of smoky espresso and bitter dark chocolate. Rich and satisfying.
Collective Arts Gose With Guava 4.9% 473ml (Ontario)
Pours a cloudy grapefruit juice colour. Briny minerality and tart guava notes on the nose. Big tart guava notes on the palate with a hint of salt and herbal coriander. Juicy acidity. 

Driftwood Windcatcher 10th Anniversary Sour Ale 7.3% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours a rich, clear golden yellow colour. Complex floral notes of cider, vinegar, oak and funk on the nose. Same on the palate with good sweet/tart balance, long finish and a kiss of oak.

Powell Like…Totally Awesome Table Saison with Plums 4.3% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a cloudy pink-purple colour. Bold sour plum notes the nose.Good acidity on the palate with notes of sour plum and a crisp dry finish.
Powell Pretty Little Thing Dry Hopped Table Saison 3.8% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a very pale yellow colour. Notes of bright citrus, ripe tropical fruit and bubblegum on the nose. Dry and light with notes of saison spice, tart fruit and a hint of malt.

Red Collar Impeachment Wit 5% 473ml (Kelowna, BC)
Pours a pale yellow colour. Funky peach and medicinal herb notes on the nose. Sweet and herbaceous, with nice peach notes and tart finish. Dry and light.

Lighthouse Nightwatch Coffee Lager 5% 473ml (Victoria)
Pours a deep golden yellow colour. Notes of fresh, nutty cofffee beans on the nose. Soft notes of Coffee Crisp candy with the light body of a lager and crisp finish.
Lighthouse Siren’s Echo Imperial Red Ale 8% 473ml (Victoria)
Pours a deep copper/orangey brown colour. The smell is off-the-charts fruity. It’s tropical and lush and complimented by caramel and toffee malt notes. There’s plenty of the same on the palate. Sweet, spicy, malty and boozy with citrus and caramel. So much going on. 

Bad Dog Octodog Apocalypse Squid Ink Stout 4.8% 473ml (Sooke, BC)
Pours a dark black-brown colour. Notes of briny ocean, dark chocolate and smoke on the nose. Drinks very dry with notes of cocoa powder, dark chocolate and smoke. Hint of brine. Light bodied and tasty.

Fernie Java the Hut Coffee Milk Stout 5% 650ml (Fernie, BC)
Pours a black-brown colour. Aromas of condensed milk and coffee. Creamy coffee, char, smoke and dark chocolate with a dry finish on the palate

Dageraad Wet Hopped Blonde 7.5% 650ml (Burnaby, BC)
Pours a hazy orange-yellow colour. Juicy white wine and orchard fruit notes on the nose. Bursting with incredible fruit notes balanced with hop spice, clove notes and a soft bitter finish.

Twin Sails Volcano Prince Pineapple Coconut Milkshake IPA 6.5% 473ml (Port Moody, BC)
Pours a cloudy pale yellow-orange colour. Notes of pineapple juice and hint of coconut on the nose. Sweet and spicy on the palate with big pineapple juice notes and nice hit of coconut on the creamy finish.

Boombox Wizard Mode IPA 7% 473ml (Vancouver)
Pours a slightly cloudy pale yellow-orange colour. Juicy/funky citrus and guava notes on the nose. Sweet, with a soft mouthfeel and juicy citrus and hop funk notes. Bitter finish.
Steel & Oak Catamaran IPA 6% 473ml (New Westminster, BC)
Pours a seriously cloudy/hazy pale yellow colour. Juicy pineapple and ripe tropical fruit notes on the nose. Dry on the palate with plenty of tropical fruit and spice notes and a bit of bitterness on the finish.

Vancouver Island Hermannator Ice Bock 9.5% 473ml (Victoria)
Pours a dark brown-black colour. Molasses and dark fruit notes on the nose. A bit different this year, with hints of smoke, dark chocolate and roasty malt with a bit of dark fruit on the palate, as well.
