Tasting Notes for the Latest Craft Beer Arrivals: Nov 4

Every week we’ll be posting tasting notes for the latest craft beer arrivals. The big, cold-weather brews are starting to show up, as evidenced by this week’s featured brews.

NEW

NewGrowthDavid

Driftwood New Growth Pale Ale 5% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours rich golden colour. Big, fresh-smelling notes of citrus, grapefruit and pine on the nose. Really wonderfully pungent. This is even more complex and delicious on the palate with huge citrus fruit notes and hints of resin and pine. Quite a nice hop presence that is balanced by a perfect amount of malt. A terrific session beer for hopheads.

hoyne voltage 2014

Hoyne Voltage Espresso Stout 5.6% 650ml (Victoria)
Pours a dark chocolate brown colour. Funky, floral notes of freshly pulled espresso on the nose. There are notes redolent of a porter on the palate: chocolate, smoke and coffee.

ImperialeNinkasi650ml

Ninkasi Imperiale Imperial Stout 9.1% 650ml (Oregon)
Pours a dark brown/black colour. Dark fruit on the nose with some subdued hop citrus. Notes of smoke, chocolate, coffee and fig/date/raisin fruit on the palate. Creamy mouthfeel with a heavy dose of bitterness on the finish. A big beer all around.

hermannator

Vancouver Island Hermannator Eis Bock 9.5% 6-pks (Victoria)
Pours a dark chestnut brown colour. Notes of roasty malt, dark fruits, brown sugar on the nose. Taste is sweet, boozy and unapologetically malty, with notes of smoke, marzipan, molasses, nuts and grapes/raisins. Rich, deep and warming.
